2020 CIPP Sewer Rehabilitation
updated 10/19/20 - 4:35pm
The City of Mishawaka is embarking on our 10th annual Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP) Sewer Rehabilitation project. This year’s project was awarded to Inland Waters Pollution Control. To view an interactive map of the various locations in which this process will be completed this year, follow this link. To keep everyone up to speed on where work will be taking place, a weekly press release will be issued updating the progress and specific area scheduled to be complete.
CIPP is a trenchless (no digging) construction method in which a liner (soft piece of pipe) is installed inside the existing sewer pipe. The liner is then inflated, steamed and cured. Once cured, the liner is as strong and durable as a new piece of pipe. Prior to the lining process, equipment and workers will be on site to clean and video the existing sewer pipes.
On rare occasions during the lining process, a distinctive resin-like odor (similar to a nail salon) may be detected in nearby homes and businesses. The odor is not an indicator of danger, and should dissipate quickly if exposed to air. Typically, the odor enters through a pipe without a trap, or one that has a dried out trap. To be proactive, we ask owners to fill any floor drains and/or traps with a bucket of water to reduce the possibility of this odor entering their home or business. If this does not resolve the issue, the owner shall contact the contractor via their phone number listed below. The odor is typically limited to the block of the actual lining, but on rare occasion may travel through the liner to further locations.
