DEFINITION: Will have public contact with customers either over the phone or those who come into the business office for payments, service requests, or information. Process written applications, terminations or changes on customer accounts. Perform record keeping activities, which involve receiving funds and issuing receipts to customers. Must use independent judgement when dealing with the public, solving problems associated with balancing, correcting errors, managing the fluctuations in the daily work load and solving problems related to customer accounts. When doing cashier job, reports to Office Manager. When working counter or phones, reports to Customer Service Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
 
  1. Assist the public at the counter or over the telephone, pertaining to customer accounts and problems.
  2. Open or close utility accounts and prepare paperwork and contracts for processing by data entry.
  3. Schedule water meter installations and make appointments to get inside readings.
  4. Receive and record fees collected through mail or over the counter.
  5. Examine records and reports for errors.
  6. Check credit rating and identity check on SS# for new customer accounts and mail credit references.
  7. Prepare payment plans on computer.
  8. Process delinquent account cut off lists on a weekly basis.
  9. Request rereads to determine errors on customer accounts.
  10. Collect funds received from general public through the night drop, mail, drive-thru and in person. 
  11. Count and balance cash receipts, prepare and make bank deposit and prepare financial reports and summary statements.
  12. Prepare totals for data processing and track and collect Non-Sufficient Funds checks.
  13. Assist in opening mail.
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  1. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent GED
  2. Must possess reasonable knowledge of modern office practices and procedures
  3. Must possess and maintain a high level of speed, skill, and accuracy in performance of job
  4. Must have experience with cash register and calculator
  5. Must have experience with Windows PC word processing and data entry
  6. Must have and maintain a high level of accuracy when performing as a Cashier.
  7. Must have excellent customer service skills with one to two years’ work record reflecting those skills
  8. Must have experience with multi-phone lines
  9. Must pass a pre-employment drug screen
  10. Must adhere to the City of Mishawaka’s Drug and Alcohol-Free Policy
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
 
  1. Must be able to get up and down continually all day or must be able to remain seated for long periods of time.
  2. Must be able to stand, stoop, reach, kneel, and bend to perform duties.
  3. Must be able to climb stairs up and down.
  4. Must have ability to speak clearly, hear and see adequately.
  5. Must have ability to remain calm and polite under pressure from the public.
  6. Must have ability to get along well with fellow employees.
  7. Must be able to maintain working speed to handle large amounts of customers, incoming phone calls and volume of work.
  8. Must have ability to maintain accuracy under pressure.
