Stefaniak Appointed To Asst. Chief - Uniform Division

Assistant Chief Jason StefaniakMishawaka Mayor Dave Wood and Mishawaka Police Chief Ken Witkowski have announced the appointment of Sergeant Jason R. Stefaniak to the position of Assistant Police Chief-Uniform Division of the Mishawaka Police Department. Stefaniak replaces Mark Tavernier who retired as Chief of the Uniform Division on May 31st, having held the post since he his appointment on October 5, 2004.

The Assistant Chief-Uniform Division post is one of three Assistant Chief positions in the Mishawaka Police Department, each reporting directly to the Chief of Police. The Uniform Division is the largest Division with the Uniform Division Chief supervising approximately 72 uniformed police officers.

Stefaniak is a 15-year veteran of the Mishawaka Police Department, joining the Department on April 4, 2000. He graduated from Indiana University South Bend with a Bachelor’s Degree, High Distinction: Criminal Justice in 1999 and was named the Criminal Justice Student of the Year, 1999. He was part of the Uniform Division, Midnight Shift for 11 years, served as the School Resource Officer for Mishawaka High School, a member of the Street Crimes Unit, a SWAT Instructor, and is currently a Training Coordinator with the Mishawaka Police Department. Stefaniak has been very instrumental in Department training and hiring issues working with the Administration, City Legal Department and Human Resources on the development and implementation of department policy. He has re-written the standards for firearms proficiency, focused on individual officers to meet Law Enforcement training standards, and has assisted in the transformation of the Mishawaka Police Department hiring process and standards.

Chief Witkowski also commented, “I would like to congratulate Jason and welcome him to the administrative team. Jason brings new energy and motivation to this position. Jason will use his experience from several years as the Department Training Coordinator and take a hands-on approach while keeping a professional standard in dealing with the everyday challenges that come with this position. Jason has established himself within the Law Enforcement community by networking with other agencies and gaining their respect by sharing his tactical expertise and training knowledge. I am excited for the future and direction of the Mishawaka Police Departments Uniform Division under the leadership of Jason Stefaniak.
