The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety/Utility Board was called to order by President Gary West at 10:05 a.m.  All members were present.  Mr. Prince moved to dispense with the reading of the minutes of February 2, 2010, and accept them as circulated.  Mr. Watson seconded; motion carried.


Bid Openings:

There were no bid openings.


Mayor’s Comments:

Mayor Rea deferred to Chief Witkowski and said a brief staff meeting would follow today’s Board meeting.


Department Head Reports:

Police Chief Ken Witkowski announced that the recipients for “Officers of the Fourth Quarter” are Sgt. Mike Janicki and Cpl. Steve Madison.  Chief Witkowski said Sgt. Janicki and Cpl. Madison were instrumental in the apprehension of a subject who robbed the Fun Tan business on McKinley Avenue on November 3, 2009.  Because of their great instincts, determination, and tenacity, the thief was quickly found and apprehended, taking him off the streets and preventing him from committing further crime.


Human Resources Director Tara Antonucci presented a contract agreement between the City of Mishawaka and the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns (IACT) to establish a unified plan of group health insurance for employees and retired local employees of the City of Mishawaka.  The agreement also includes the Town of Highland, City of Lafayette, and City of Angola that will partner with the City and IACT.  Mayor Rea will serve as a Trustee on the Board of Trustees representing the City of Mishawaka.  Mr. Watson moved to accept the contract agreement as presented.  Mr. Prince seconded; motion carried.


Approval of Claims:

Mr. Watson moved to approve nineteen (19) Claim Dockets for Utilities and Civil City as submitted by City Controller Yvonne Milligan for a total amount of $2,098,297.94.  Mr. Prince seconded; motion carried.


New Business:

Secondhand Store License renewal applications have been received from the businesses listed below:


Buzz’s Used Furniture, 225 N. Main St., Mishawaka

Once Upon a Child, 5936 Grape Rd., Mishawaka


Mr. Prince moved to approve the Secondhand Store License renewals for the above referenced businesses.  Mr. Watson seconded; motion carried.


A request received from the Susan G. Komen Northern Indiana Race for the Cure for a 5K run/walk to be held on Saturday, May 1, 2010 remains under advisement.

There being no additional business brought before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 10:16 a.m.
