Merrifield Pool To Remain Closed For 2020

Merrifield Pool will not be opening for 2020 season. The Mishawaka Parks Department has been evaluating this situation for nearly a month. A firm decision needed to be made at this time due to the amount of time that it takes to prepare the pool for the summer.

This decision was made with the guidance put forth by the Indiana State Department of Health, Governor Holcomb and the CDC regarding the opening of public pools. It would be very difficult to operate the pool with the significant restrictions, strict social distancing requirements and disinfecting procedures.

We believe that the restrictions and procedures that would have to be implemented to maintain and operate would significantly impact patrons' ability to enjoy themselves and receive the experience that they paid for. These restrictions would also increase expenses and reduce revenue. We have determined that running the pool at an increased deficit is not currently viable.

At this time, there are too many uncertainties that could occur over the next few weeks and months due to the COVID-19 crisis for us to open the pool. Because of the many issues stated above, we are joining the numerous other municipalities across the state and country that are closing their pools and aquatic centers for the summer.

We truly appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation. We would encourage the community to take advantage of our free splash pads this summer as an activity to stay cool. These splash pads will open in accordance with Governor Holcomb’s plan which is currently set for June 14th.
