That’s why it’s important to remember that keeping your property maintained isn’t just about appearance—it’s about community responsibility.
Grass Cutting Isn’t Optional—It’s the Law
City ordinance requires that grass and weeds be kept below 9 inches. Why? Because overgrown lawns are more than an eyesore—they attract pests, harbor allergens, and negatively impact the character of our neighborhoods. If your property isn’t in compliance, the City will send a notice, and if it goes unresolved, we’ll step in and take care of it—at your expense.
The good news? Most of our residents stay on top of this without issue. If you’re a neighbor who might need help, reach out. This is Mishawaka—we look out for each other.
Property Upkeep: Small Details, Big Impact
In addition to lawn care, make sure fences, sheds, and porches are in good condition and that yard clutter is kept to a minimum. Well-maintained properties strengthen home values and keep our community safe. Trash & Recycling: Simple Steps Matter
Trash and recycling carts should be placed curbside no earlier than 6:00 PM the night before collection and brought in by the evening of pickup day. Overflowing carts or bags left beside them create messes, attract animals, and show a lack of regard for your neighbors. Let’s keep our streets clean and orderly.
Recycling also plays a big role in our sustainability goals—please follow the guidelines on what can and can’t be recycled. Contaminated bins result in more waste, not less.
At the end of the day, these small actions—cutting your grass, maintaining your property, properly handling your waste—are how we show respect for our city and one another.
