Mishawaka Hosts AIM Regional Roundtable on SEA 1

Mishawaka Hosts AIM Regional Roundtable on SEA 1 and the Future of Municipal Sustainability

This week, the City of Mishawaka had the privilege of hosting a regional roundtable with Accelerate Indiana Municipalities (AIM) to discuss the significant impacts of Senate Enrolled Act 1 (SEA 1) on communities across Indiana. As current President of AIM, Alcalde Dave Wood welcomed municipal leaders from throughout the state to Mishawaka City Hall for an open, candid conversation about how SEA 1 is shaping local budgets, public services, and long-term fiscal sustainability.

SEA 1, as passed, places substantial financial strain on municipalities by limiting future revenue growth while local needs continue to rise. Like many cities, Mishawaka is projecting revenue reductions of nearly 20%—equivalent to approximately $15 million—by 2028. Such reductions will directly affect essential services, including public safety, infrastructure maintenance, and quality-of-life initiatives that our residents depend on and expect.

The roundtable served as an important opportunity for municipal officials to compare data, share concerns, and offer practical recommendations to improve the legislation moving forward. AIM presented a set of thoughtful, bipartisan reforms designed to ensure that Indiana cities and towns can remain strong, safe, and financially stable while still honoring the intent of SEA 1.

Mayor Wood emphasized the importance of collaboration and proactive leadership, noting that Mishawaka will continue to advocate strongly on behalf of its residents and work with state policymakers to pursue solutions that protect local services.

“This conversation is not about politics—it’s about people,” Mayor Wood said. “Our responsibility is to make sure Mishawaka continues to deliver the exceptional public safety, parks, utilities, infrastructure, and services that define the Mishawaka Way. These discussions help us chart a responsible and sustainable path forward.”

The City of Mishawaka thanks AIM and the many municipal leaders who traveled to participate. Together, we are committed to charting a balanced, sustainable future for all Hoosier communities.
