Keep Your Water Flowing This Winter: Tips to Avoid Frozen Pipes As temperatures plummet this winter, the Mishawaka Utilities Water Division is asking all Mishawaka residents and MU Water customers to take simple precautions to protect their homes and our water system from the costly and inconvenient damage caused by frozen water lines. When temperatures drop below freezing for an extended period, water in pipes can freeze, expand, and cause pipes to burst, leading to water loss and expensive repairs. To help prevent this, we recommend letting your water trickle from a faucet during frigid weather. A small, steady stream of water can keep your lines flowing and reduce the risk of freezing. Why Should You Let Your Water Trickle? Moving water is less likely to freeze. It relieves pressure in your pipes, minimizing the risk of bursting. It’s an affordable and easy way to protect your home during extreme cold.

MYAC Celebrates a Year of Service and Achievement

On Monday, May 12, the 2024–2025 Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) gathered to celebrate a year of service, leadership, and community involvement. The ceremony, held at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of Mishawaka City Hall, honored the contributions and accomplishments of MYAC members and marked the official close of the program year.

Family, friends, and local officials joined to recognize the achievements of the youth council. Members were presented with Certificates of Appreciation, and graduating seniors received special awards in recognition of their leadership and dedicated service to the community.

Students selected for MYAC are nominated based on their academic excellence, leadership potential, and commitment to civic engagement. The council is composed of high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors who serve a two-year term. Membership in MYAC is both an honor and a responsibility, and those who complete their terms are recognized for their exemplary performance.

Throughout the year, MYAC members actively participated in various city and community initiatives. They engaged with local businesses, contributed to a major community project in October, and collaborated in committees to complete a Leadership Project by year’s end. These efforts reflect the council’s strong commitment to service and leadership development.

The evening concluded with remarks from distinguished MYAC alumni. Justin Fisher, a member of the University of Notre Dame Football Team, and Hannah Mullet, Coordinator of Football Operations at the University of Notre Dame, spoke to the 2024–2025 council members. Both reflected on how their time with MYAC shaped their paths and encouraged current members to continue pursuing excellence and community impact.

The City of Mishawaka extends its sincere thanks to the 2024–2025 MYAC for their dedication, hard work, and commitment to making Mishawaka a better place. The council continues to embody the values and spirit of our community.
