A powerful storm system moved through Northern Indiana during the evening hours of Thursday, June 11th, bringing heavy rain, intense lightning, and multiple tornadoes that touched down across the region. The storm caused widespread damage and power outages throughout portions of Mishawaka Utilities Electric’s service territory and surrounding communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the severity of the storm, Mishawaka Utilities Electric (MUE) crews worked tirelessly throughout the night and into the early morning hours of Friday, June 12th, to assess damage, make critical repairs, and restore service as safely and quickly as possible. Thanks to their extraordinary efforts and preparation, nearly all Mishawaka customers served by MUE had their power restored by the early morning hours.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We are incredibly grateful for the dedication and professionalism of our electric crews,” said Mayor Dave Wood. “While many were seeking shelter from the storm, our utility employees were out in the darkness, rain, and debris working to restore power and keep our community running. Their commitment to serving our residents is nothing short of remarkable.”<\/span><\/p>\n

As electric crews worked through the night, Central Services employees were called in beginning at midnight to respond to storm-related damage throughout the City. Currently, eight Central Services crews are deployed across Mishawaka with a primary focus on opening roadways, sidewalks, and alleys to ensure safe access for residents, businesses, and emergency responders.<\/span><\/p>\n

The City will continue recovery efforts throughout the coming week. Dedicated brush crews will be working throughout neighborhoods to collect storm debris. Residents who place brush at the curb should call 574-258-1660 to report their location and be added to the pickup list.<\/span><\/p>\n

Residents may also dispose of storm-related brush and tree debris at: City of Mishawaka Compost Site, 1105 E. Fifth Street.<\/span><\/p>\n

While cleanup efforts will continue over the next several days, the City’s immediate response demonstrates the strength of the partnership between Mishawaka Utilities and City departments. From restoring power to clearing streets and assisting residents, employees worked together throughout the night to minimize disruptions and restore normalcy as quickly as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

“This storm tested our community, but it also demonstrated the dedication of the men and women who serve Mishawaka every day,” Mayor Wood said. “We are thankful that nearly all power was restored so quickly and proud of the crews who continue working to clean up storm damage and assist our residents.
