On September 11, members of the Mishawaka community joined people across the nation in pausing to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and to honor the extraordinary courage of the first responders who ran toward danger to save others.

Local police officers, firefighters, public officials and community members participated in remembrance ceremonies at St. Patrick’s County Park and MISSION BBQ. These solemn gatherings provided an opportunity to reflect on the victims, survivors and families forever affected by the attacks, while recognizing the service and sacrifice of first responders in our own community.

The annual “Ringing of the Bell” ceremony at St. Patrick’s County Park began at 9 a.m. The ringing of the bell is a longstanding fire service tradition used to honor those who have answered their final call. On this 25th anniversary, its sound carried a particularly powerful reminder of the firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency personnel and ordinary citizens whose bravery defined one of our nation’s darkest days.

September 11 reminds us not only of profound loss, but also of the unity, compassion and selfless service displayed in the hours, days and months that followed. Those qualities remain visible every day in the men and women who protect and serve Mishawaka and the surrounding community.

The City of Mishawaka extends its deepest gratitude to all who participated in this year’s observances and to the public-safety professionals who continue to answer the call with courage and dedication.
