DEFINITION
Mishawaka Parks and Recreation is looking for an ENERGETIC LEADER to join our camp family for 10 incredible weeks this summer (2025). The Camp Assistant is responsible for the oversight of all campsites (specified days for each site) and will report directly to the Camp & Community Engagement Director. The Camp Assistant will be committed to high quality programming and will provide leadership, supervision, coaching, and support to camp staff to ensure the safety and wellbeing of counselors and campers alike. The ideal candidate possesses a strong work ethic, the capacity to multitask, and maintain strong connections with families and campers. Candidates should have the ability to adapt to new situations, ideas, and challenges, and must be able to take initiative and work proactively. Must be self-motivated and provide leadership to cultivate a supportive team. This position is a seasonal position, with the expectation that you would work between 30-35 hours a week for 10 weeks (M-F, 8am-3pm).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
1. Directly carries out leadership responsibilities to effectively oversee and guide counselors.
2. Provides role modeling to counselors and campers alike.
3. When necessary, communicate with camp families regarding achievements/behavioral issues of campers.
4. Addresses discipline issues that are of concern and cannot be resolved by immediate camp staff.
5. Documents and notifies Camp & Community Engagement Director of incidents, accidents, damaged equipment, and supply needs.
6. Performs administrative functions as needed including report of suspicious or inappropriate behaviors. Follows mandated reported requirements related to abuse.
7. May be required to help lead camp in the absence of a site supervisor.
8. May be required to take the lead on field trips and welcoming guest speakers.

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
1. Assist the Camp & Community Engagement Director with counselor assessment, training, and development.
2. Commitment to all 10 weeks of camp, Monday through Friday.
3. Attend required staff trainings.
4. Camp runs from Jun 3 – Aug 1, Monday – Friday, No Camp July 4. Staff Training May 27-30.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
1. Reports directly to Camp & Community Engagement Director.
2. Supervises and assists all camp staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Reach with hands and arms
2. Use hands to operate tools or controls
3. Sit, climb, balance, stoop, crouch
4. Occasionally lift or move 50 pounds
5. Talk and hear
6. Lift and move light objects without assistance

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:
In general, we are exposed to varied temperatures and weather conditions. Equal proportion of time spent indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work depends on weather conditions. A flexible schedule is required, with hours normally between 30-35 hours per week.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
1. Ability to work independently and show initiative.
2. Must possess good public relations, communications, reading and writing skills.
3. Ability to develop long-range plans and to accurately evaluate work accomplished.
4. Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with employees, coworkers and public.
5. Must accept supervision and responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Preferred teacher or college graduate interested in learning on the job training relating to the field of camp programming, recreation, communication, psychology, education, sociology, environmental studies, or a related field.
2. Preferred camp, classroom, or related experience.
3. Proven experience to lead, manage programs, and staff/volunteers.
4. Strong oral and written communication skills required.
5. Valid driver’s license and persistent mode of transportation throughout the day for site-to-site visits.
6. First Aid, CPR, AED Certification-Adult and Child (required, may be obtained through the City).
