On Wednesday April 4th at 15:oo a very thankful gentleman (name not included to respect privacy) came to MPD station 4 to meet and thank the people who helped save his life after going into cardiac arrest on an early Spring Day at the Mishawaka Hooters in 2023. Rob, the electrician who initially supplied the AED that day was in town to join us in the celebration.
He and Russ, a Respiratory Therapist, sprang into action and provided CPR and used an AED defibrillator to restart his heart and keep his blood circulating until the professionals of the Mishawaka Fire and EMS arrived to continue providing lifesaving care. The gentleman was subsequently transported to the hospital, survived the medical emergency and ultimately had a triple bypass at a local hospital.
Citizens and MFD – EMS Professionals come together to Save a Life
Mishawaka’s continued healthy growth means more work for all city departments including the MFD. The general upward trend in the number of Fire and EMS Department responses increases every year. Mishawaka firefighters and EMS continue to meet the challenge with better training, better facilities and better equipment.
Our personnel are cross trained as emergency medical technicians with over half being AEMTs or Paramedics. All fire vehicles carry oxygen, first aid equipment and semi-automatic defibrillators for cardiac emergencies.
