City of Mishawaka Capital Projects Update
Matthew Lentsch
We’re investing in critical infrastructure projects across Mishawaka to improve stormwater management, modernize our utilities, enhance pedestrian safety, and support long-term community growth. These improvements are foundational to our neighborhoods, our schools, and the quality of life we’re committed to delivering. Here’s what’s happening right now:
Cedar Street Bridge
The City of Mishawaka is pleased to announce that after more than a year of dedicated effort, the newly reconstructed Cedar Street Bridge will reopen to vehicular traffic by the end of the business day today, Friday, August 15, 2025.
This long-anticipated milestone marks significant progress on a major infrastructure project designed to improve safety, mobility, and quality of life for the citizens of Mishawaka.
We understand how important this bridge is to our daily lives, and I’m proud of the tremendous work done by our team to bring it back online.
Third Street Phase III (Church to Cedar)
We’re undertaking a major infrastructure upgrade along Third Street. This includes separating outdated combined sewers and rerouting stormwater through a new 60-inch carrier pipe, buried 15 to 20 feet underground. We’re also replacing old water and sewer lines, and rebuilding the street with new curbs, sidewalks, and pavement.
A key part of the project is a new 72-inch stormwater outfall at the river near Lincoln Way East, improving drainage and helping us comply with our long-term sewer control plan. While construction staging is happening on a small section of Laurel Street, impacts are being minimized, and any disturbed areas will be fully restored. We expect the remaining Third Street work to be completed by fall 2026.
Linden Area Improvements (Cambell, Sixth, Seventh & Eighth Streets)
Starting in September 2025, we’ll begin separating outdated sewers and installing new water and sanitary lines to parts of these eastside streets that never had full access before. These improvements will provide critical new utility services, and will also include new curbs, sidewalks, and paving. Completion is anticipated by fall of 2026.
CSO 20/Vistula Project
We’ve recently completed safety upgrades at the Ballard/Vistula intersection, including a raised pedestrian crossing. Construction continues eastward toward Bittersweet Road and will tie into a previously completed Community Crossings project.
This project is carefully timed around the Twin Branch School schedule and includes new water, sewer, and storm infrastructure, as well as complete street reconstruction. Work began in 2024 and will wrap up in fall 2025.
West Street Improvements (Signal Removal at Main & Eighth)
We’ve made a key improvement at Main and Eighth Streets by removing an outdated traffic signal after a comprehensive study. In its place, we’ve added all-way stop signage with upgraded pedestrian bump-outs and a new red flash beacon—enhancing safety, especially for schoolchildren using this route. These improvements were completed and opened on August 8th, just in time for the start of the school year.
Twelfth Street Phase IIIA
This is a federally funded INDOT project focused on Twelfth Street between Merrifield and Campbell. It includes utility relocation, a new storm sewer system, an upgraded water main, reconfigured intersections, and a new 8-foot multi-use path to improve mobility.
Utility work is ongoing this season, with participation from several providers including NIPSCO, AEP, and Comcast. While we originally anticipated completion in fall 2026, utility delays may extend that timeline into 2027.
“Each of these projects reflects our commitment to making smart, lasting investments in Mishawaka’s infrastructure. These are the building blocks of public health, safety, economic development, and neighborhood quality of life. We appreciate the community’s patience as we complete this important work.” — City of Mishawaka
