Mayor Dave Wood a Leader in Habitat for Humanity Effort During ND Blitz Build

This week, Mayor Dave Wood is rolling up his sleeves and leading by example as a crew leader for Habitat for Humanity’s ND Blitz Build. Joined by hundreds of volunteers from the University of Notre Dame, Mayor Wood is working to make homeownership a reality for families in need. This event also celebrates the inauguration of Father Bob Dowd as the new President of Notre Dame, marking a significant community service initiative that brings together students, faculty, and local leaders.

“Some of the most fun I get to have is building homes with Habitat for Humanity,” Mayor Wood shared. His passion for service extends far beyond this week’s event. With a lifelong dedication to helping others, Mayor Wood has played a pivotal role in constructing over 60 homes through Habitat for Humanity, both locally in St. Joseph and Elkhart Counties and globally. His service has taken him from Benton Harbor, Michigan, and Durban, South Africa, to Plains, Georgia, Maragondon, Cavite in the Philippines, and Houston, Texas, where he served as a crew leader for President Jimmy Carter’s Work Projects.

One of Mayor Wood’s proudest achievements was bringing the 2018 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project to Mishawaka. Under his leadership, the city welcomed hundreds of volunteers who built 23 homes in just one week, transforming a neighborhood and creating a lasting impact on the community. This remarkable effort showcased the power of collaboration and the importance of affordable housing in fostering a vibrant, supportive community.

Beyond his work with Habitat for Humanity, Mayor Wood has consistently demonstrated his commitment to public service. He has served on his church’s School Board of Trustees and Finance Committee, and he spent 11 years representing the Mishawaka community as a member of the Common Council before being elected Mayor. His leadership has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Ernestine M. Raclin Community Leadership Award in 2007, the Community Spirit Award for Economic Development and Affordable Housing from the State of Indiana in 2009, and the Human Rights Award for Affordable Housing from the Human Rights Commission of St. Joseph County in 2010.

Mayor Wood’s work with Habitat for Humanity is just one example of his unwavering commitment to service. His hands-on approach and leadership continue to inspire others to get involved and make a difference. “Service has been a huge part of my entire life,” Mayor Wood said, and his actions speak volumes about his dedication to building a better future for all.

As he joins the Notre Dame community this week for the ND Blitz Build, Mayor Wood exemplifies the spirit of service that makes Mishawaka such a special place to live, work, and grow. His contributions, both on and off the job site, are a shining example of the impact that one person can make when they dedicate their life to helping others.
