Mishawaka Utilities Is Dedicated To Clean Water.

During the week of August 3rd, 2026, Mishawaka Utilities staff and Arcadis contractors visited Mishawaka community members to identify the material of the water service line in their basements, and conduct free, voluntary inspections of water service lines.

These free water inspections help to protect residents from lead. Mishawaka Utilities is working to identify all water service lines that might contain lead.

Many methods for identifying materials are expensive and invasive. A simple, less expensive solution is to look at the service line as it enters your house which often requires us to go into your basement.

Lead is a naturally occurring material that was used for many years in residential and industrial plumbing products. Lead has been considered a good material for plumbing because it could be easily formed into different shapes and resist leaks.

For this reason, older homes may have lead-containing service lines, plumbing, and kitchen or bath fixtures. Also, lead can accumulate inside galvanized steel pipe sections; therefore, homes with galvanized steel pipes that may have been downstream of a lead service line segment may also be impacted.

Lead is dangerous, and since pipes inside a home can contain lead, this can affect drinking water quality. Drinking water quality may also be affected if plumbing fixtures and faucets inside the home contain lead.

Mishawaka Utilities Water does not contain lead when it leaves our treatment plants, and the water mains that bring water throughout the system are not made of lead.

However, a service line brings water into your home or business. Mishawaka Utilities maintains the portion from the water main to your curb stop, and you are responsible for the portion from the curb stop into your building. Either portion could be made of lead or galvanized steel, which could affect water quality inside your home or business.
