Mishawaka Utilities Responds Swiftly to Vandalism-Induced Power Outage
At approximately 2:00 a.m. last night, a section of our downtown Mishawaka electric grid experienced an unexpected outage due to deliberate and unfortunate vandalism to MUE equipment. This criminal act damaged vital infrastructure, causing a disruption in electric service to nearby homes and businesses.
Our highly trained and dedicated Mishawaka Utilities Electric Division team responded immediately. Once the affected equipment was safely assessed and isolated, our professionals worked diligently through the early morning hours to perform the necessary repairs. By 3:30 a.m., power was successfully restored to all impacted customers.
While we are grateful for the swift and professional response from our MUE team—whose members are always ready to act around the clock to serve our community—we take this incident seriously. Mishawaka Utilities is coordinating with law enforcement to investigate the damage, identify those responsible, and take appropriate action to help prevent future events.
We also want to take this opportunity to remind the public: electric infrastructure is not only essential—it can be extremely dangerous. Power lines, transformers, utility boxes, and other components are high-voltage systems. Whether tampered with unlawfully or approached without proper training or knowledge, these systems can cause severe injury or even death. Please, for your safety and the safety of our crews, never attempt to touch, move, or interfere with any electrical equipment. If you see something that looks damaged or out of place, call Mishawaka Utilities or 911 immediately.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the critical nature of our electric infrastructure and the outstanding job our MUE professionals do every day to ensure your lights stay on—safely, reliably, and affordably. Mishawaka Utilities continues to invest in the security and resilience of our electric system and in the people who keep it running.
We thank our customers for their patience and understanding, and most importantly, our MUE professional and crews for their fast, expert response in restoring service to our community.
