Why Mishawaka is the Right Utility to Serve Regional Growth
City of Mishawaka | Mishawaka Utilities
The City of Mishawaka recently filed a petition with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) to reaffirm our service territory for water and sewer utilities—including areas surrounding the proposed Microsoft Data Center site.
While Mishawaka was first to file under state law, what matters even more is why we’re the right choice to serve this and other large-scale projects.
Here’s why:
-
We’ve planned for this. Over 20 years ago, Mishawaka and St. Joseph County jointly created a plan that identified Mishawaka Utilities as the provider for this corridor. Since then, the City has invested over $140 million in water and wastewater infrastructure in the area.
-
We’re ready today. Our Juday Creek Water Treatment Plant and upgraded sewer system already have the capacity to serve a data center and future development—without delay or new build-out.
-
We’re experienced. Mishawaka Utilities is a full-service, public utility with a long track record of reliability. We have the staff, systems, and infrastructure to support high-volume users like Microsoft—something other nearby providers aren’t currently equipped to do.
-
We’re public, not private. Our utilities are locally owned and managed for the benefit of our residents and ratepayers—not private shareholders.
At the end of the day, this is about making sure the region grows the right way—with trusted infrastructure, fair utility rates, and public accountability. Mishawaka Utilities is ready and well-positioned to help lead that growth.
