Keeping Mishawaka Beautiful Starts at Home
A Friendly Reminder About Property Maintenance and Grass Height Standards
As spring and summer arrive, the City of Mishawaka would like to remind residents that maintaining yards and properties is an important part of protecting neighborhood appearance, property values, public health, and community pride.
One of the things residents and visitors consistently notice about Mishawaka is how clean and well-maintained our neighborhoods are. That does not happen by accident—it reflects a community-wide commitment to taking care of our homes, properties, and shared spaces.
As grass begins growing rapidly during the warmer months, residents are reminded that City ordinances require grass and weeds to be maintained at a height of less than nine (9) inches.
Excessively tall grass and unmanaged vegetation can:
- Create neighborhood nuisance concerns
- Harbor rodents, insects, and pests
- Impact drainage and visibility
- Negatively affect surrounding properties
- Reduce overall neighborhood appearance and quality of life
The City encourages residents to regularly mow and maintain their lawns, trim weeds, and keep properties free of debris throughout the growing season.
Helpful Reminders:
- Grass and weeds must be maintained below 9 inches
- Yard waste may be bagged and placed out with weekly trash service in accordance with Waste Management guidelines (one bag per week or grass comingled in the WM trash bin)
- Residents may also utilize the Mishawaka Recycling Center for approved yard waste disposal during seasonal operating months
The City’s Code Enforcement Department works proactively with residents whenever possible to encourage voluntary compliance before enforcement measures become necessary.
“Our neighborhoods matter,” said Mayor Dave Wood. “Maintaining our properties is part of taking pride in our community and helping keep Mishawaka one of the best places in Indiana to live, work, and raise a family.”
Residents with questions regarding property maintenance standards may contact the Mishawaka Code Enforcement Department for additional information.
Together, we can continue keeping Mishawaka clean, attractive, and strong neighborhood by neighborhood.
