Organic Resource and Household Hazardous Waste Center
The Organic Resource and Household Hazardous Waste Center in Mishawaka will close for the season after end of business on Saturday, December 3, 2022.
Residents of Mishawaka are responsible for proper disposal of their solid waste items. Please note, it is illegal to dump or openly burn solid waste in several areas in the state of Indiana. Please understand the proper disposal process for all household waste. The City of Mishawaka thanks you ahead of time for your dedication to keeping our city clean and safe.
Seasonal Services
For snow removal, leaf pickup and even Christmas tree disposal, our Central Services Division has you covered. Mishawaka experiences all four seasons, and we are dedicated to making sure our city stays clean and safe no matter the weather.
Recyclables
The Environmental Center no longer accepts bottles, cans, newspapers, cardboard or other common household products for recycling. Mishawaka residents can recycle those products through the city’s Curbside Recycling Program.

- Batteries-only Ni-Cad, lithium, button cell & rechargeable batteries
- Corrosives- lye, acid & drain cleaner
- Mercury- elemental, thermostats, switches and relays & vapor lamps
- Paints & Solvents- paints, stains, finishing oils & thinners
- Pesticides/Herbicides- weed/grass killer, insect killers & garden chemicals
- Poisons- mouse/rat killers & roach/ant killers
- Tires- car & pickup truck tires
- Waste Fuels- charcoal lighter, fuel oil, gasoline, lamp oil & cooking oil
- Waste Oils & Lubricants- engine, gear & coolant
- Light Bulbs- CFL & fluorescent

- NO MEDICINE OF ANY KIND

- Household trash/recycling
- Fire Extinguishers
Additionally, mercury, though rare, can also be found in some household items. Visit or for more information related to mercury safety. If you still have questions regarding the disposal of hazardous materials, please contact our Environmental Center for more information. Our Hazardous Waste Center will accept household hazardous wastes directly from your home.
Household hazardous waste can also be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Center at St. Joseph County Waste Management, located at 828 Kerr St. in South Bend.

Mishawaka’s Organic Center is located at 1105 E. 5th St. Regular hours are Tuesday – Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. The center will open for the season on Saturday, April 8, 2023.
