Leaf Pick Up Schedule for Thanksgiving The Mishawaka Central Services Department will be closed Thursday, November 28th and Friday, November 29th in observance of Thanksgiving. We will move through the city in 3 days from November 25th-27th and will do our best to pick up all areas. Please have your leaves raked to the curb by Monday, November 25th. Once we move through an area, we will not return on your scheduled day. Leaves may always be bagged and put out with your weekly trash pick-up or taken to the Mishawaka Recycling Center, 1105 E. 5th St., from 8:30am to 3:15pm, Tuesday through Saturday if you are a City of Mishawaka resident. Please note that the Mishawaka Recycling Center will be closed November 28th and 29th.

In Memoriam for Mishawaka Police Officers

Remembering Their Sacrifices

The City of Mishawaka and the Mishawaka Police Department want to recognize the fallen MPD officers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our community. We do not take their efforts for granted and are forever indebted to their service.

January 9, 2010

Corporal James Szuba and his K-9 partner, Ricky, were killed when their squad car was struck while assisting with a pursuit. Corporal Szuba had served with the Mishawaka Police Department for over 7½ years. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter, two brothers, two sisters and his mother. One brother currently serves as a sergeant, and their father was a retired officer with the South Bend Police Department.

Roberts-Memoriam

December 13, 2003

Corporal Thomas Roberts and Patrolman Bryan Verkler were shot and killed by a suspect after they responded to a call of shots being fired. Cpl. Roberts died on the scene. He had served with the Mishawaka Police Department for 14 years. He is survived by his two daughters.

Patrolman Bryan Verkler and Corporal Thomas Roberts were shot and killed by a suspect after they responded to a call of shots being fired. Patrolman Verkler was transported to a local hospital, where he died two hours later during surgery. Patrolman Verkler had served with the Mishawaka Police Department for 2½ years. He is survived by his wife.

Casper-Memoriam

June 10, 1930

Patrolman Clarence Casper was on duty when his motorcycle struck a car turning left. Casper received multiple broken bones and internal injuries and succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Patrolman Casper had served with the Mishawaka Police Department for one month. He was also a World War I veteran and had motorcycle experience during his enlistment. He was survived by his wife and two children.
