MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WNDU) – “Mishawaka’s police chief talked about the department’s new 12-hour shift schedule at a meeting on Thursday night.
The monthly, west end neighborhood meeting was at the St. Bavo’s Parish, offering an update to the community on how the new schedule is faring with the department.
With the changes, the officers are working 243 more hours per year than under the eight-hour format. They’re also making more money, with starting pay for new recruits at $89,000.
“They say it’s a win-win, I say it’s a win-win-win; it’s a win for the city, it’s a win for our officers in terms of retirement, is the biggest issue; and we’re putting more officers on the street for the community that we work in,” said Richard Freeman, the president of Mishawaka Fraternal Order of Police #91.
Chief Witkowski says the new shift structure puts more officers on the street each day than with the eight-hour format.”
