Incumbent serves as Probationary Firefighter for the City of Mishawaka Fire Department, responsible for responding to fires and other emergency situations to protect life and property.

 

DUTIES:

Responds to fires, medical emergencies, traffic collisions, rescue situations and extractions as necessary.  Engages in extinguishing fires and attends to safety and rescue of civilians.

Connects supply lines and controls and extinguishes fires using hand lines, ladders, and portable water monitor.

Searches buildings and rescues victims from buildings and motor vehicles using appropriate hand and power tools.

Contains and controls hazardous material spills with appropriate certifications required.

Performs a variety of salvage and cleanup operations, including removing water, chemicals, and debris.

Inspects, cleans, and maintains all personal gear, tools, apparatus, and equipment.  Examines and tests equipment and reports any damage.

Assists in cooking, cleaning, and maintaining fire station grounds and building as assigned or as needed, including mowing grass, making repairs, and removing snow.

Prepares required reports and maintains records of activities.

Maintains certifications and attends training as assigned or required.

Requisitions and restocks supplies, material, and equipment.

Maintains knowledge of City streets, location of hydrants, water supply and distribution systems, and location of hazardous premises.

May assist in educating the public to protect themselves, others, and property from fires and other dangerous conditions.

Perform duties of a company officer in their absence or as assigned.

Performs related duties as assigned.

 

I. JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

High school diploma or HSE required.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of or ability to obtain all State of Indiana certifications required for firefighters, including but not limited to National Incident Management System (NIMS), State of Indiana Firefighter I and II, EMT, and Advanced EMT within 18 months of employment.

Ability to meet all departmental hiring and retention requirements, including passage of medical, psychological, and written exams, physical abilities test, polygraph exam, and drug screen.

Thorough knowledge of all local, City, State, and federal laws and regulations relating to the activities of a Fire Department to enforce and implement effective policy for the prevention and investigation of arson and other violations and protection of the lives of others.

Thorough knowledge of the operation of apparatus, tools, and equipment used in performing duties of a Firefighter.

Thorough knowledge of tactics used in fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services.

Working knowledge of radio frequencies, codes, dispatch procedures, and limitations with ability to speak clearly and distinctly, hear and be heard and understood when communicating in person, by radio or by telephone.

Ability to inspect, clean, and maintain all department apparatus, tools, equipment.

Ability to respond to fires, medical emergencies, traffic collisions, and rescue situations.

Ability to connect supply lines, and control and extinguish fires using hand lines, ladders, and portable water monitors.

Ability to recognize signs and symptoms of some communicable diseases and dangers of blood-borne pathogens, and ability to protect oneself from infection by utilizing universal health precautions and avoiding high risk environments.

Ability to apply foam and chemicals for fire suppression and control up to level of certification.

Ability to search buildings and rescue victims from buildings and motor vehicles using appropriate hand and power tools.

Ability to contain and control hazardous material spills to appropriate certification level.

Ability to perform a variety of salvage and cleanup operations, including removing water, chemicals, and debris.

Ability to assist in cooking, cleaning, and maintaining fire station grounds and building.

Ability to participate in drills, demonstrations, and courses in life support, emergency medical treatment, and firefighting techniques.

Ability to prepare required reports and maintain records of activities.

Ability to maintain current knowledge of City streets, location of hydrants, water supplies and distribution systems, and location of hazardous premises.

Ability to maintain certifications and attend training as assigned or required.

Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.

Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other City departments, emergency personnel, health care personnel, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.

Ability to use standard office equipment including, computer, keyboard, copy machine, scanner, fax machine, and telephone.

Ability to use hand/power tools including, but not limited to, medical equipment, hammer, screw drivers, drills, air nozzle, mop/broom, gauges, files, and extraction equipment.

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.

Ability to work on several tasks at the same time, work rapidly for long periods, and under time pressure.

Ability to apply knowledge of people and locations.

Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.

Ability to perform duties of a company officer in their absence or as assigned.

Ability to regularly work evenings, weekends, and/or extended hours and occasionally travel out of town for training, sometimes overnight.

Ability to serve on call on a rotation basis and appropriately respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.

Possession of a valid driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.

II. RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent works according to a formal schedule with work priorities primarily determined by supervisor and service needs of the public.  Work is reviewed primarily for compliance with department policy.  Assignments are guided by broad policies and/or general objectives.  On rare occasions, decisions are made in the absence of specific policies and procedures, and or guidance from supervisor.  Errors are primarily detected or prevented through procedural safeguards. Undetected work errors could result in endangerment to self or others and loss of time to correct error.

III.  PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other City departments, utility companies, emergency personnel, health care personnel, and the public for purposes of exchanging and explaining information, instructing, and rendering service.

Incumbent reports directly to Lieutenant or Captain.

IV. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Incumbent performs duties in a fire station and at emergency scenes, involving sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, handling/grasping/fingering objects, lifting/carrying objects weighing more than 50 pounds, hearing sounds/communication, pushing/pulling objects, crouching/kneeling, bending, reaching, keyboarding, speaking clearly, close/far vision, color/depth perception, extreme hot or cold temperatures, wet/icy surroundings, fumes/odors/dust/dirt, a noisy environment, confined areas, wearing protective clothing or equipment, walking on uneven terrain, working with or near chemicals, working in high places such as ladders, roofs, bucket truck, exposure to violent/irate individuals, responding to situations involving potential harm to self or others, and driving at a high rate of speed.

Incumbent is regularly required to work evenings, weekends, and/or extended hours, and occasionally is required to travel out of town for training, sometimes overnight, serve on call on a rotation basis, and respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
