Air Quality Action Day – Tuesday, August 5th

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has declared that today Tuesday, August 5th is an Air Quality Action Day in our region for Fine Particulate Matter.

Canadian wildfire smoke circulating in the region will be pulled into northern Indiana Tuesday. Fine Particulate monitor readings will increase as the plume of smoke moves across the region.

IDEM forecasted Air Quality Action Days indicate anticipated higher levels of ground-level ozone and fine particulate matter only. Other factors may affect overall air quality.

Ozone

Moderate

Particulate Matter (PM 2.5)

Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups

Fine particulate matter settles deep into the lungs and cannot be easily exhaled.

Sensitive groups (people with respiratory diseases, older adults, and children) should reduce prolonged outdoor exertion, and continue checking air quality throughout the week to determine when it is best to be active outdoors.

Do your part to help clean the air by taking action!

  1. Bike, walk, carpool, or take the bus
  2. Perform regular vehicle maintenance
  3. Conserve fuel by combining trips
  4. Refuel your car in the evening
  5. Reduce engine idling time
