Celebrating a Legacy: Mishawaka’s Corporation Counsel John Roggeman Honored with Former Indiana University Football Teammates

By Matt Lentsch, City of Mishawaka

This past weekend, John Roggeman, our esteemed Corporation Counsel, returned to his alma mater, Indiana University, to commemorate a significant milestone with his former IU football teammates—the 45th anniversary of their unforgettable victory in the 1979 Holiday Bowl. This event, etched in Hoosier history, brought together players, coaches, and their families for a weekend of celebration, reflection, and memories.

John, accompanied by his wife, had a weekend filled with reunions, heartfelt stories, and spirited conversations, as he joined his former teammates and coaches in Bloomington. The 1979 season was remarkable, culminating in a 38-37 win over Brigham Young University in the Holiday Bowl—the first bowl victory for IU’s football program. John played a pivotal role in that triumph and helped set a new benchmark for Indiana football.

Reflecting on his experience, John spoke warmly of the powerful connections and teamwork that characterized his years at IU, both on and off the field. As we know well in Mishawaka, his dedication, integrity, and commitment have continued to serve our city admirably in his role as Corporation Counsel, just as they did in his days as a Hoosier.

The City of Mishawaka extends its congratulations to John Roggeman and his fellow teammates on this special anniversary. We are proud to celebrate the accomplishments of one of our own and to honor his legacy both as a valued member of our city’s leadership and as a Hoosier football alumnus.
