Three of our MFD firefighters, alongside others from our region including South Bend and Goshen, have been deployed as part of a swift water rescue team to North Carolina. They are responding to the projected flash flooding caused by Hurricane Helene, ready to assist communities in desperate need. In addition, Mishawaka Utilities electric division has sent a crew of five dedicated team members and two utility trucks as part of a mutual aid effort to assist in the response to Hurricane Helene. MFD Celebrates Notable Accomplishments from Amongst their Ranks

Rhys Howell MFD230 (A Shift Station 1)- Since Rhys has worked with us at MFD he has obtained new Indiana State certifications in Firefighter 1 & 2, Haz-Mat Operations and Awareness, Technical Rescue Awareness, and he has been granted his Lead Paramedic Status by the St. Joseph County EMS Commision.

Nathan Vincent MFD231 (B Shift Station 1)- Since Nathan has worked with us at MFD he has obtained new Indiana State certifications in Firefighter 1 & 2, Haz-Mat Operations and Awareness, Technical Rescue Awareness, Fire Officer Strategy and Tactics and as of just a couple of months ago has become a Nationally Registered Paramedic.

Brandon Voorde MFD232 (C Shift Station 4)- Since Brandon has worked with us at MFD he has obtained new Indiana State Certifications in Driver Operator General and alongside Nathan has just recently passed certification testing to become a Nationally Registered Paramedic.

Ryan Leader has been promoted from the rank of Suppression Lieutenant to Suppression Captain filling the vacancy of recently promoted Battalion Chief Dave Bennett.  Known as “Root” everyone on the department, Capt. Leader at the time of his promotion was our most senior Lieutenant having been promoted to that rank in 2017.  As a Firefighter and Driver/Operator Capt. Leader primarily served on Engine 4 followed by his service as a Lieutenant on Engine 1 and most recently Truck 1.  Prior to working in the Princess City, he served as a career firefighter with Pike Township in Indianapolis.

Andrew Lauver has been promoted from the rank of EMS Lieutenant to EMS Captain filling the vacancy following transfer of now Suppression Lieutenant Shawn Waldron.  Capt. Lauver grew up in the Mishawaka and prior to serving his home community he worked for our neighbors at  Penn Township Fire Department.  Capt. Lauver has been a paramedic since 2010 and has a passion for Emergency Medical Services.  He is also an Indiana certified EMS Primary Instructor and teaches part time with Ivy Tech Community College.
