MISHAWAKA, Ind., Marh 19, 2025 – The City of Mishawaka and Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) are reminding the public of work being done on high voltage power lines at the Pricket Marina Dog Park.  Out of an abundance of caution amid an ongoing project, a temporary fence has been installed to separate the active construction area from the usable part of the dog park. The Pricket Marina Dog Park has remained open to the community and pets since the safety fence was installed. The southern portion of the dog park is currently open, while the northern half will remain closed through early summer, weather permitting. Safety is paramount, and dogs and their owners must not enter the construction zone at any time.  Regular patrols of the park are ongoing to ensure the public’s safety.  During the duration of the project, we must mandate that community members stay out of the active construction zone and keep your distance from workers and equipment for your safety.

MFD New Fire Station 2 by the Numbers

The new Fire Station #2 is 23,000 square feet and places an emphasis on firefighter safety and wellness.  The building includes five apparatus bays and is sized for future City growth.    The building includes 12 individual dorm rooms with separate changing areas and 6 individual restrooms.  This station will house up to 36 firefighters at full occupancy. The current design is essential to create a station that truly is an inclusive, safe place. Identical to Station #4, the training room will also serve a dual purpose and be available to the public as a community room for neighborhood meetings.

The need for this investment is being driven by the significant increases in calls for service.  Leading up to the start of construction, the Mishawaka Fire Department reached a new yearly milestone in 2022 by responding to 10,686 calls for service (an overall 11% increase) that included 21,660 total apparatus responses in 2022.  This means the department receives on average, 1.2 calls for service every hour. The need for service has remained constant with 10,421 calls in 2023.  The greatest number of calls for service continue to be for emergency medical service (EMS) responses. Our ambulances and fire trucks responded to 8,098 (10% increase) calls that required medical care.  Mayor Wood indicated “This is a significant investment in Mishawaka that will provide increased capabilities for public safety for generations to come”.
