On Saturday, August 1st, 2026, the Mishawaka Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at an environmental cleanup and industrial processing facility located in the 500 block of Marion Street.
The first arriving crews encountered heavy fire conditions involving the commercial structure. Due to the size of the building, the amount of fire involvement, a fire attack was initiated per standard operations. Mutual Aid from South Bend Fire Department was requested and received.
Thanks to the quick actions of facility personnel and responding firefighters, all occupants were safely accounted for and there were no injuries.
As is standard practice, the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Investigators will continue examining the scene over the coming days to determine the fire’s origin and cause. No additional information regarding the investigation will be released until it has been completed.
Fire department personnel continue to respond periodically to extinguish isolated hot spots within the debris. This is a normal part of the firefighting process following a commercial fire of this size. As deeply burned materials are disturbed or exposed to fresh air, pockets of heat can rekindle and produce visible smoke or small areas of fire.
The property owners are coordinating and assisting with areas that are not easily accessible. This process allows firefighters to access concealed hot spots, thoroughly extinguish them, and ensure the scene is made safe. Members of the Mishawaka Fire Department will remain available to respond as needed throughout this process.
We also want to thank the residents and businesses affected by temporary road closures, traffic disruptions, and other inconveniences created by the emergency response. Your patience allowed emergency personnel to work safely and efficiently during a complex and demanding incident.
