Covid-19 Update and Adjustments to Day Camps

We know many of you are eagerly waiting to hear updates regarding our plan to have our Adventure Day Camp program this summer. We are planning to host camp this summer, however, it will not be camp as usual.

Day Camp currently falls under the CDC guidelines for childcare. We are expecting day camp specific guidelines to be released sometime this week. The City of Mishawaka Parks and Recreation takes the safety of our community very seriously. We are working very hard to plan what camp will look like under the new guidelines.

Here are some of the things that have changed, more information will be released as concrete plans are put in place.

Schedule
  • Camp will tentatively run June 15th- August 7th, 2020. (Week 1 of camp has been canceled)
  • No changes to scheduled hours have been made.
  • Camp will run from 8:00-3:00 daily. AM care will be offered from 7-8am. PM care will be offered from 3-5:30pm. Prices remain the same.
Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures Have Changed
  • Cars will be directed to form a single line where each car will unload their children for screening at the designate drop off point.
  • Parents will not get out of their vehicle. A staff person will interact with the parent to sign in the children and ask screening questions.
  • Screening consists of: taking their temperature, and asking a series of questions such as have they had a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing in the past 72 hours?
  • Signs will be in place to indicate the flow of traffic during drop off and pick up (think school carpool lanes).
Activities

Explorer Camp (Ages 6-12) held at Castle Manor/Merrifield Park

  • 45 campers will be enrolled each week at this site. Campers will be split into 5 groups of 9 campers with 2 staff per group. These groups will be static meaning they will have limited to no interaction with other groups.
  • Extreme weather plan: Older campers will locate to our George Wilson facility if extreme weather is in the forecast. Parents will be notified if their child is in this group prior to the start of camp that week. Decisions will be made the night before if this plan will take effect the next day. This is the only way we can operate camp inside and meet the CDC 6’ social distancing requirements.

Lil’ Explorer Camp (Ages 4-5) held at the Battell Community Center

  • 30 campers will be enrolled each week at this site. Campers will be split into 3 groups of 10 campers with 2 staff per group. These groups will be static meaning they will have limited to no interaction with other groups.

This will be a back to basics summer. All activities will follow social distancing guidelines and adhere to the CDC 6’ rule when possible.

  • Where 6’ distancing can be maintained, no face covering is needed.
  • When social distancing cannot be maintained, staff will wear masks. Campers will be encouraged to wear masks but will not be required to do so.
Parent Cooperation
  • Parents will need to assist in explaining and supporting the procedures that will now be in place.
  • Parents will be notified and must sign the new liability release when it becomes available.

We are working hard to bring campers a summer full of fun, but things will be different and full cooperation is needed to operate a safe camp experience.

All plans are subject to change as we receive updates. We will do our best to make regular updates.
