Corporal James Szuba and his K-9 partner, Ricky, were killed when their squad car was struck while assisting with a pursuit. Corporal Szuba had served with the Mishawaka Police Department for over 7½ years. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter, two brothers, two sisters, and his mother. One brother currently serves as a sergeant and their father was a retired officer with the South Bend Police Department. |

Corporal Thomas Roberts and Patrolman Bryan Verkler were shot and killed after they responded to a call of shots being fired. The suspect opened fire on Cpl. Roberts and Patrolman Verkler. Corporal Roberts died on the scene. Corporal Roberts had served with the Mishawaka Police Department for 14 years. He was survived by his two daughters. |

Patrolman Bryan Verkler and Corporal Thomas Roberts were shot and killed after they responded to a call of shots being fired. The suspect opened fire on Corporal Roberts and Patrolman Verkler. Patrolman Verkler was transported to a local hospital where he died two hours later during surgery. Patrolman Verkler had served with the Mishawaka Police Department for 2½ years. He was survived by his wife. |

Patrolman Clarence Casper was on duty when his motorcycle struck a car turning left. Casper received multiple broken bones and internal injuries and succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Patrolman Casper had served with the Mishawaka Police Department for one month. He was also a World War I veteran and had motorcycle experience during his enlistment. Patrolman Casper was survived by his wife and two children. |
