In a pivotal move towards enhancing the social and economic vibrancy of our city, the Mishawaka Common Council has voted overwhelmingly in favor of the Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) ordinance. During the public council meeting held on Monday, July 15, 2024, in the Mishawaka City Hall Council Room, eight out of nine council members cast their votes in support of the ordinance.
The DORA ordinance will bring a fresh and inviting atmosphere to downtown Mishawaka. Riverfront area. The concept of DORA is rooted in a state law that went into effect on July 1, 2023, allowing Indiana cities to designate specific areas for outdoor alcohol consumption. This means that adults aged twenty-one and over will soon be able to purchase alcoholic beverages from participating vendors and walk within a designated area with their drinks in designated DORA cups.
The introduction of DORA is expected to significantly boost socializing, dining, and shopping activities, making Mishawaka’s downtown livelier and more attractive. By providing a designated area for outdoor alcohol consumption, DORA aims to create a vibrant and safe environment for residents and visitors alike.
It is important to note that the implementation of the DORA ordinance will not be immediate. The approval by the Mishawaka Common Council is just the first step. The ordinance now awaits approval from the State of Indiana. If state approval is granted, Mishawaka could see the DORA become operational in about 60 to 90 days.
As part of the Indiana state approval process, participating vendors such as Sun King Brewery, Social Cantina, and Mishawaka Public House will need to submit requests to be a designated permittee within the designated area. Additionally, signage will be installed to delineate the boundaries of the DORA, ensuring patrons are aware of where they can enjoy their beverages.
The establishment of a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area will add to Mishawaka’s growing list of attractions and activities, fostering a sense of community and enhancing the downtown experience. While there is still work to be done, including securing state approval and setting up the necessary infrastructure, the DORA holds great promise for our city.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Mishawaka Common Council for their diligent research and thoughtful consideration of the DORA ordinance. Their decision to give DORA a chance marks the beginning of a new chapter for Mishawaka, one that promises increased community engagement and economic vitality.
Stay tuned for updates on the progress of Mishawaka’s DORA, and get ready to enjoy a new, dynamic way to experience our beautiful downtown, riverfront area.
