Remembering Dan Bilancio, a dedicated and beloved member of the Mishawaka community

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dan Bilancio, a dedicated and beloved member of the Mishawaka community, who passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at the age of 71. Dan’s life was one of extraordinary service, commitment, and compassion, particularly in his roles as a Paramedic with the City of Mishawaka and as the head of the City’s EMS.

Born in Mishawaka on August 10, 1953, Dan was deeply rooted in our community. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Consetta and Vincent Bilancio, and leaves behind a family who admired and cherished him. He is survived by his sister, Antonia (Bruce) Bilancio of Mishawaka; brothers, Vincent (Yoko) Bilancio of Mishawaka and Joe (Reid) Bilancio of Washington, D.C.; as well as his nephew, Aaron Wolford, and niece, Hana. Dan’s legacy also lives on in his devotion to his furry companions, with his beloved cat Blaze and his next-door canine friend, Cooper, who were constants in his life.

Dan’s professional journey was marked by an unwavering dedication to public safety. For 30 years, he served as a Paramedic with the City of Mishawaka, where he provided critical care and support to countless residents in their times of need. In the last two years of his distinguished career, Dan rose to the position of Chief of EMS, a role in which he demonstrated remarkable leadership and a profound commitment to the well-being of our community. Concurrently, he served as a Paramedic Technician in the emergency department at St. Joseph Hospital for 28 years, further exemplifying his dedication to helping others.

Even after his retirement in 2008, Dan’s commitment to public service did not wane. He was elected to the Mishawaka City Council, where he served for four years, bringing his passion for the community and his deep sense of responsibility to the role. Dan once expressed that if he could make even one person’s life a little better, he had accomplished all he had set out to do—a sentiment that truly encapsulates his life’s work.

Dan never married, and while his work often took precedence, he found joy in traveling the world and forming lifelong friendships across the globe. A devoted animal lover, his compassion extended to all living creatures, and in his honor, donations can be made to The Meow Mission or Pet Refuge in South Bend.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28, at St. Monica Catholic Church with Fr. Jason Freiburger presiding. Friends and family are invited to gather from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the Mass at 12:00 p.m. at St. Monica Catholic Church, located at 222 W. Mishawaka Ave, Mishawaka, IN 46545.

Dan Bilancio’s legacy of service and kindness will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He made our community stronger, safer, and more compassionate, and he will be deeply missed.
